Experience
Through his participation on numerous award-winning projects, Mr. Westervelt has
distinguished himself as an internationally acclaimed tennis facility
consultant. He brings to every project over fifty years of experience including
twenty-one years in the design and construction of sports facilities. He spent
twenty years in the international marketplace and is experienced in
international construction. During his career, Mr. Westervelt has personally
overseen the design and/or construction of more than 7,000 tennis courts around
the world.
Mr. Westervelt has presented numerous seminars around the globe on sports
facility design with emphasis on modern concepts of tennis facility design
including the United States, London, England; Paris and Nice, France; Bologna
and Rome, Italy; Charleroi, Belgium; Lisbon, Portugal; Istanbul, Turkey;
Wroclaw, Poland; Tokyo, Osaka and Hokaido, Japan; Taipei, Taichung and
Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Hong Kong; Kuala Lumpur; Malaysia; Singapore; Bangkok,
Thailand; Shenzhen, China; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and Lima, Peru.
In addition, Mr. Westervelt has authored many articles in sports magazines, as
well as major tennis magazines, and continues to provide technical consultation
to authors of articles on sports related subjects. He has been a Contributing
Editor to Tennis Industry Magazine and served as the Technical Editor of the
USTA publication Tennis Courts. Having previously served on the Joint Editorial
Board of the USTA/USTC&TBA publication TENNIS COURTS: A Construction and
Maintenance Manual, an internationally acclaimed technical manual on all aspects
of tennis court construction, Mr. Westervelt continues to provide technical
support for this publication.
Mr. Westervelt has served on the faculty of the Athletic Business Conference,
NRPA, Congress for Recreation and Parks, United States Professional Tennis
Association, US Professional Tennis Registry, the USTA Tennis Teachers
Conference and other USTA section meetings. Mr. Westervelt is a founding member
of the U. S. Tennis Court and Track Builders Association, where he was honored
in 1989 for 25 years of active service and in 1992 was presented the Industry
Merit Award, the most prestigious award in the tennis industry and honored with
a Life Membership in the Association. He served as Chairman of the Board of
Directors of the Association, as well as Chairman of various technical
committees. He continues to be an active Professional Member of the U. S. Tennis
Court and Track Builders Association and is a regular speaker at its annual
technical meetings.
He is a founding member of the United States Tennis Association, Tennis
Facilities Committee and served as Chairman of the Committee from 1985 to 1989.
He served as Vice-Chairman of the Technical Committee from 1989 to 1996. He was
presented with the 40-Year Volunteer Service Award by the USTA in 2006, serving
the entire period as a member of the Technical Committee. He was Chairman of the
Sub-Committee for Electronic Line Sensing Systems, and a member of the ITF Court
Surface Testing and Court Lighting Subcommittees. He served as Judge for the
United States Tennis Association Annual Outstanding Tennis Facilities Awards and
as Judge for the Tennis Industry Magazine “Court-of-the-Year Award”. He was
honored with a Life Membership in the American Society of Civil Engineers in
1994. He has been a member of the ASTM Sub-Committee FO8.23 on tennis courts and
running tracks.
The United States Tennis Association, the U. S. Tennis Court & Track Builders
Association (now known as the American Sports Builders Association), and Tennis
Industry Magazine have presented overy sixty-five National Awards to tennis
facilities that were either designed by Mr. Westervelt or on which he
participated on the design team as the tennis facility design consultant.
Military Service:
Commissioned in the U.S. Navy, Civil Engineer Corps, Mr. Westervelt
served from 1953-1955 as Maintenance Officer of the San Francisco
Naval Shipyard. He maintained his active U.S. Naval Reserve status
until 1989 when he retired with the rank of (Naval) Captain, Civil
Engineer Corps, United States Naval Reserve.
