Through his participation on numerous award-winning projects, Mr. Westervelt has distinguished himself as an internationally acclaimed tennis facility consultant. He brings to every project over fifty years of sports facility design experience, including twenty-one years of design/build experience. He spent twenty years in the international marketplace and is experienced in international construction. During his career, Sheldon Westervelt has personally overseen the design and/or construction of more than 7,000 tennis courts around the world.
Mr. Westervelt has presented numerous seminars around the globe emphasizing modern concepts of tennis facility design, including presentations in England, France, Italy, Belgium; Portugal; Turkey, Peru, Poland, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, China, and United Arab Emirates.
Mr. Westervelt has served as the technical editor of the USTA publication Tennis Courts and on the faculty of the Athletic Business Conference, NRPA, Congress for Recreation and Parks, United States Professional Tennis Association, US Professional Tennis Registry, the USTA Tennis Teachers Conference, the USTA Community Tennis Development Workshop and other USTA section meetings. Author of many publications, he continues to provide technical consultation and support to other authors seeking to publish articles on sports related topics.
Mr. Westervelt is a founding member of the American Sports Builders Association and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association. Sheldon has twice received their most prestigious Industry Merit Award. Sheldon is a founding member of the United States Tennis Association, Tennis Facilities Committee and served as Chairman of the Committee from 1985 to 1989 and as Vice-Chairman of the Technical Committee from 1989 to 1996. In 2006, the USTA honored his continuous service on the Committee with the rarely presented “40-Year Volunteer Service Award.” He continues to serve ASBA, USTA, and international tennis.
The United States Tennis Association, the American Sports Builders Association (including its predecessor USTC&TBA), and Tennis Industry Magazine have presented over seventy prestigious awards to tennis facilities that were either designed by Mr. Westervelt, or upon which he participated on the design team as the tennis facility design consultant.
He was honored with a Life Membership in the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1994. Commissioned in the U.S. Navy, Civil Engineer Corps, Mr. Westervelt served from 1953-1955 as Maintenance Officer of the San Francisco Naval Shipyard. He maintained his active U.S. Naval Reserve status until 1989, when he retired with the rank of Naval Captain, CEC, USNR.
